GIFS

Updated: Jan 24, 2020

GIFS are a creative and simple way of expressing movement from a still image.

But how do you make a GIF?

I'll show you in under 20 steps!

What you need- Still image

Photoshop

Steps:

1) Open image on photoshop.

2) Double click background layer to transform to normal layer and create a new layer.

3) Remove the background of the image using the magic wand tool (Select background, delete) .

4) Duplicate image layer.

5) Select top copy of image with magic wand on the background, press command, shift and I key to inverse layer.

6) Click select---modify---expand, type in 5 pixels to the pop up.

7) Click edit---puppet warp which places a grid over the image.

8) Click image to place pins around it, which will not only keep it all in place, but help move the image.

9) Select and drag pins where you want you want to move.

10) Select both layers and duplicate.

11) Select all layers, click window---timeline.

12) Click video timeline button and select create frame animation.

13) Select 'three line' tool in bottom right corner of image borders and click make frames from layers.

14) Select lowest layer on layer palette, go on the flyout panel and click match layers across frames. Press okay. This puts a white background you have selected on all frames.

15) Throw white frame to trash can.

16) Change frame speed to 1 second

17) File---save---export---save to web--- gif file

Overall, I am fairly happy with the overall result of my GIF, it simply and effectively demonstrates movement by repeating 4 frames (2 unique frames). However, the thickness and quantity of the black lines changes within the second and fourth frame, making the effect less smooth. To develop this I would ensure both images are entirely identical, excluding the areas of movement, and change the background of the GIF to a different colour or style.

Hope you enjoyed this mini tutorial! :)
